PHOENIX -- All options should be considered to prevent rampages like the Minnesota school shooting that took 10 lives -- including making guns available to teachers, a top National Rifle Association leader said Friday.

"I'm not saying that that means every teacher should have a gun or not, but what I am saying is we need to look at all the options at what will truly protect the students," the NRA's first vice president, Sandra S. Froman, told The Associated Press.

Gun-control restrictions would not have prevented Jeff Weise, 16, from killing nine people and himself Monday at Red Lake High School near Bemidji, Minn., said Froman, an attorney expected next month to be elected president of the NRA, which claims 4 million members.

The presence of an unarmed guard at the school failed to stop the siege, she noted.

"No gun law, no policy that you could implement now or that was already implemented, I think, could possibly prevent someone so intent on destruction," she said. "I think everything's on the table as far as looking at what we need to do to make our schools safe for our students."

Froman said if it is the responsibility of teachers to protect students in a school, "then we as a society, we as a community have to provide a way for the teachers to do that."

Froman cited the 1997 school shooting incident in Pearl, Miss., where a teacher retrieved a gun from his car when a student opened fire, then held the student at bay until police arrived.

A law prohibiting guns in schools "is not going to stop someone who has evil in their heart and who has the capacity to commit those crimes from doing them," Froman said.

If the physcos don't know who has one they will be less likely to try anything stupid.

I don't think knowing that a few teachers have guns would stop the psychos.

It will unless they are truly bent on dying! Something like this would affect the spur of the moment idiots. The only way this would have worked at Columbine would have been had they actually shot them. Which is why I said this is not be for everyone. Not just anyone can squeeze the trigger. For true physcos that don't really care, see the sentence on Columbine.

What is it with Americans and their fascination with guns? People talk about their right to bear arms and all that, but seriously, why are Americans unable to act like mature reasonable and rational people when it comes to firearms? And when is more guns ever a good solution to problems with guns? What an irrational society. They think that if they had more guns with more and more people with rights to carry those guns then they'd be safer. Sorry to be a rational north american here, but if you think there's a problem with guns, you will only get safer with less guns. Never more. Never. Ever.

I think this is the problem. No solution will prevent all acts of violence. There is no "magic bullet" that can stop all crime. For example, having the guns locked up and inaccessible might have prevented the Red Lake shooting, but there is no way it could have prevented the Atlanta incident. Some ideas may prevent some crime, but nothing will prevent all crime. No fortress is impenetrable. I just don't think arming teachers will do more good than bad. I know I would feel less safe knowing that my teachers brought guns into my school. Maybe some sort of non-lethal weapon (pepper spray? tasers?) would be ok, but not guns.

Sorry but this is just NOT true! Go look at crime stats for DC, NYC, UK and Austrailia. Less guns, MORE crime! DC and NYC have some of the highest crime rates in the USA.

Less guns = more crime is not the issue for me. I'm speaking about simple gun deaths and people being hurt or killed by guns, not crime in general. So you're a bit incorrect there. More guns = more access to guns = more chance of being killed by guns. It's really quite simple to see why it's not good to give more people guns. Guns for teachers. Ha. What a totally stupid idea. When you look at America's education system and it's high numbers of kids who can't read, there's no reason to think their teachers would be responsible enough to handle guns, especially when it's around kids. What's the matter with people who say teachers should have guns?

Actually when I refer to crime I mean gun related deaths. So my assertion still stands. Go to the CDC website and look up gun related deaths for DC & NYC and you'll see what I mean. Besides which the guns *your* refering to are for the most part illegal guns.

Hey, I have a great idea. Let's make it a law that everyone has to have one arm removed and have a gun attached in its place. That way we'll all have guns everywhere we go, and we'll all be a lot safer.

Problem solved.
