Kerry Trying to Turn Tide of Campaign

WASHINGTON -- Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry, trying to recover from a brass-knuckles campaign against his character, is attempting to steer the election to a referendum on President Bush's leadership.

Kerry has less than seven weeks to take over the lead in the presidential race. Democrats hope a major shift will come from the debates, but his strategy in the meantime is based less on building himself up than on tearing down the president.
Story Continues Below

Bush has enjoyed a lead of about 5 or 6 percentage points in national polls since the Republican National Convention, which portrayed Kerry as a vacillating opportunist. Democrats remained largely positive during their convention five weeks earlier, but now are trying to make the case that Bush has not been honest in his life and his leadership.
``It's time we had a president who tells the American people the truth,'' Kerry said in Ohio. ``It's that simple.''

The strategy comes late in the campaign. Democrats acknowledge Kerry has had difficulty pinning down the message he wants voters to take to the ballot box on Nov. 2, while the Bush campaign has been more disciplined and consistent.

Now Kerry is trying to turn Bush's policy choices into character flaws.

He told the Detroit Economic Club that Bush has not taken responsibility for the economic downturn and is running an ``excuse presidency.'' He told voters in Milwaukee that Bush's failure to push for a renewal of the assault weapons ban that expired Monday ``goes to the character of the president and the leadership we ought to have in this country.''

He won't get NRA backing at all and there's 4 million NRA members and over 8 million gun owners. If they ALL get out and vote John Kerry goes down in flames!

GOP raged about Clinton's character for years -- but Bushy's hands off? Bollocks!

Bob Dole didn't win, he was a War Hero and made fun of Clinton's Policies, that's why it's not going to work.

I don't think that's the only reason Dole didn't win. Dole was also mean-spirited, out of touch, and ELDERLY.

Bob Dole don't like you on his lawn saying nasty things about Bob Dole.

Bob's got Viagra and Elizabeth out of the house -- I think he's probably doing OK these days.

Bob Dole was a great candidate but Clinton was extremely popular and charismatic and still is. If Clinton were running as VP Kerry would win in a landslide.

If Monica Lewinsky's stained blue dress was running as VP, Kerry might still be able to pull off the election.

#1 Reason Kerry Won't Win:

No Karl Rove

(and no, James Carville doesn't count!)

Is that election or "erection"?

Yes, Rove reminds me of a fatter version of Grand Moff Tarkin from "Star Wars."

Love him or hate him, the reason that Bush will win is that the economy is doing well, and Kerry has not given any good reason to vote for him.

the economy is doing well

Hmm...I would say that the economy is not doing so well, but that most people are too busy working their tails off or being distracted by Iraq or 527 groups to notice the slump..

and Kerry has not given any good reason to vote for him.

He has failed in mobilizing or exiting Democrats, right now, the Democratic base is running on its own juice with very little provided by Kerry.

Not to mention a top Dem said that the Kerry Campaign has competing camps and its turning into a Civil War, also Pat Caddell (sp?) on Fox Yesterday said because the DNC backed the Memos, Kerry will be going down with the ship, Kerry lost the race do to DNC infighting over what one should do, and why does James Carville not count the MAN was a good campaigner, hell he turned a Arkansas Governor into a President, I would say that is pretty good for a campaigner or at least better than anything the DNC has right now, they should have gotten James to begin with after all he was so GOOD that he married the Republican Campaigner, hehehehe.

I doubt there is unanimity among gun-owners; many have spouses, don't forget and they don't carry assault weapons.

It's unbelievable that a broken war president is even in the running.
