Kerry Trying to Turn Tide of Campaign

Thursday, Sept. 16, 2004
WASHINGTON -- Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry, trying to recover from a brass-knuckles campaign against his character, is attempting to steer the election to a referendum on President Bush's leadership.

Kerry has less than seven weeks to take over the lead in the presidential race. Democrats hope a major shift will come from the debates, but his strategy in the meantime is based less on building himself up than on tearing down the president.
Story Continues Below

Bush has enjoyed a lead of about 5 or 6 percentage points in national polls since the Republican National Convention, which portrayed Kerry as a vacillating opportunist. Democrats remained largely positive during their convention five weeks earlier, but now are trying to make the case that Bush has not been honest in his life and his leadership.
``It's time we had a president who tells the American people the truth,'' Kerry said in Ohio. ``It's that simple.''

The strategy comes late in the campaign. Democrats acknowledge Kerry has had difficulty pinning down the message he wants voters to take to the ballot box on Nov. 2, while the Bush campaign has been more disciplined and consistent.

Now Kerry is trying to turn Bush's policy choices into character flaws.

He told the Detroit Economic Club that Bush has not taken responsibility for the economic downturn and is running an ``excuse presidency.'' He told voters in Milwaukee that Bush's failure to push for a renewal of the assault weapons ban that expired Monday ``goes to the character of the president and the leadership we ought to have in this country.''

He won't get NRA backing at all and there's 4 million NRA members and over 8 million gun owners. If they ALL get out and vote John Kerry goes down in flames!

I love how so many misunderstand the assault weapons ban, heck even I did.
Now that I am better informed on it, I can honestly say that was just a gesture to show that somebody cared because it only banned guns for their looks not because of their lethality but their DAMN LOOKS.

Hell you can make a rifle LOOK scary, but it does not mean it is any more lethal than another rifle.

FULLY AUTOMATIC WEAPONS HAVE BEEN BANNED SINCE 1934, because the main reason for that was the Thompson Machine Gun used during the 1920s wake up to how the government is pulling the wool over your eyes on the AWB, the AWB is BS (Complete and entirely Bull Shit).

For one Assault rifles have smaller calibers than their normal hunting rifle counterparts, which is why the US Military had trouble taking down Taliban people in Afghanistan the 5.56mm NATO round does not pierce as well as the Ak-47 7.62mm round.

If you are going to complain about the AWB than you damn well better back it up with proof other than people, because less people dieing when the ban was in effect could be just coincidence not actual fact, I would wager a guess that the Police were doing a better job than supposedly, like Mikey says "Rapid-Fire" were off the street. I am sorry but only law abiding citizens OBEY the law, criminals do not so do you think an AWB is going to stop them?

Mikey is completely wrong with "Rapid-fire" guns being back on the street, they NEVER LEFT what do you think all pistols are?? How about some hunting rifles?? What about supposed, "assault rifles" that changed their looks to get through the ban?? Understand the difference between the actual functioning of a rifle before you go mouthing off about an AWB should have been re-upped, B.S.

Wake up and smell the napalm because damn your lying ass is roasting

the economy is doing well

Well, for some folks, I suppose the economy is doing well. Unfortunately, I'm not a wealthy GOP donor so this doesn't apply to me.

He won't get NRA backing at all

I am a gun owner, a liberal, and I despise the NRA.

Wake up and smell the napalm

Napalm is actually illegal, too, but they changed the distillate, changed the name, and still drop it on Iraqis. The effect is much the same.

Kerry's given me several reasons to vote for him: he won't mess with a woman's right to choose, he's against the death penalty in most cases, he can actually speak the English language, his wife is a lot of fun to listen to, he wants to bring the troops home within his first term, he wants to repeal tax cuts for rich folks and restore the Clinton surpluses, and he fought in a war that he came out against, instead of being for a war he shirked (like some others I could mention)

I doubt there is unanimity among gun-owners; many have spouses, don't forget and they don't carry assault weapons.

It's unbelievable that a broken war president is even in the running.

You'd be surprised how MANY of us have those firearms. Just in case you don't understand, The AWB did absolutely NOTHING. All it DID was to stop the mfg of them. It did't take a damn one off the street like they claim!

Hey . . . who stole Bob Dole's peanut butter? Get out of Bob Dole's chair!

*in other words, wahine has nothing valuable to add to this discussion beyond a lame SNL quote that she personally finds hilarious, please indulge her . . . and also try not to point out the fact that she is referring to herself in the third person . . . that is all*

I love how a person can make fun of another's accent, damn I bet Kerry can't say Chowder properly. As for bringing troops home that is a pipe dream with both candidates, we will always have a presence there because how long ago did the Korean war ended and are we not still there? How about Bosnia? Pretty soon if we don't get our allies involved we will have to take trips to Iran and Sudan (more likely Sudan) to help with their problems. The US has become the world's problem solver, most people don't like to agree how we go about solving it, but they don't want to get involved in the first place to solve it another way.

Speaking of allies, Germany is getting involved, France will not (Big Surprise there, last time the French helped you had Rwanda, plus they were the whole reason we went into Vietnam), Russia will not because right now they have to deal with terrorists that live right NEXT DOOR. So who else is somebody going to get to help with Iraq, Afghanistan, Bosnia, Sudan, possibly Iran, etc. the list goes on, and Kerry will take action in Sudan (only an idiot who wanted to commit political suicide would not), plus Kerry will go into Iran and North Korea (which going into North Korea will make Iraq look like a freaking cake walk even with the insurgency).

As for repealing tax cuts for the rich I would first like to see these supposed rich who dislike that tax cut sign the form and give the money back to the IRS, because if he repeals the tax cut on the rich, taxes for everybody will go up simply because they always do, Congress makes sure it is an across the board tax cut and an across the board tax raise. As for being a War Hero, well so was Bob Dole and George HW Bush but they both lost so being a war hero should have nothing to do with it.

he wants to repeal tax cuts for rich folks and restore the Clinton surpluses,

Clinton Surpluses, ha, that was because of the Dot Com Bubble, but people forget it burst and the whole reason the economy was on the downturn was because of Clinton, if a President should get the blame, after all Bush or even Gore would have inherited that economic mess from Clinton so that's a moot point.

A President simply does not have control over the economy as well as some people think, when the President takes action it takes a long time to get that action to take effect and more often than not by the time it does it will do damage to the economy. The economy should get the credit and blame for the economy, not some executive waving a magic wand when somebody wants the economy to be better or worse.

BAH, could at least one UNBIASED economist support the opinion that the President controls the economy completely step up?

Well don't get your hopes up because such an economist does NOT exist.

Bob Dole don't like the tone you are using to talk about Bob Dole, Bob Dole, Bob Dole....

Hell Bob Dole forgot what Bob Dole was talking about, could you please remind Bob Dole what the question was?

he won't mess with a woman's right to choose,

Last time I checked, abortion is still legal.

he can actually speak the English language,

Not only that, but he can speak it in a variety of accents, depending on where he is!

his wife is a lot of fun to listen to,

Maybe, but the Bush twins are hot and I'd rather see them on television than Teresa Heinz Kerry.

he wants to bring the troops home within his first term,

So, he's simply going to allow a power vacuum to form in Iraq? How will that help anybody?

he wants to repeal tax cuts for rich folks and restore the Clinton surpluses,

How is he going to do this? Did the Clinton surplus arrive from taxing the Hell out of the wealthy? By the way, why does he only want to repeal the tax cut for rich folks and not everybody?

and why does James Carville not count the MAN was a good campaigner

Yes, the rat-faced bald man is good, but Karl Rove is THE MAN.
on Sep 17, 2004
Not until Karl has gotten Bush elected again and than another Rep in the White House after Bush, will Karl Rove ever beat James Carville.
on Sep 17, 2004
This is a Major reason why Kerry won't win

He did not sign a standard form 180 so I could get his entire military record through the freedom of information act while I am in the process of getting Bush's, since he did sign the standard form 180 releasing all of his military records.

More civilians died on September 11, 2001 than on any other day in American history. The deadliest attack ever made on this country, took place without anyone firing a single shot or even brandishing a gun.

The Columbine High School shootings, the D.C. area sniper attacks, and 9/11 all have one thing in common--they all took place while the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban was in place. As I said earlier...useless!
