I just got these pics and an email from a friend of mine.

The story is: this very special Mi-24 helicopter is presently flying in Afghanistan, where it is no doubt causing quite a stir.

Even now, as a member of a modern armed force, I would be taken aback by such a site. Espically when it begins to rain gunfire and other ordinance down upon me. Not to mention, many local people are more or less shut out and its quite an impressive sight to see.

What's the name of the President's helicopter? Marine 1? They should get him one of these.

Awesome paint job! Can you imagine how many man hours are in it?

Now that's a nifty bird!

This doesn't mean we've given the bad guys the bird, does it? Wouldn't be very PC.

US owns that bird, do you think we would give Afghanistan a bird we (the U.S.) spent time painting?

Nope.

I hate to break this to you, drmiler, but Link

It's a HIND??? Damn, that's a SOVIET made helicopter.

I knew it was a Mi- 24 HIND to begin with, only one who has not seen Soviet birds would not know about it.

Though now I do know it is a bird owned by the Hungarians.

Awesome sight indeed; but those man hours could be better spent scaring the hell out of al Qaeda.

Also explains the Brown Eagle design instead of a Bald Eagle Design.

Texas Wahine: GREAT JOB in exposing this inaccuracy.

stevendedalus: "Awesome sight indeed; but those man hours could be better spent scaring the hell out of al Qaeda." You hit the nail squarely on the head! Although I might add that if this actually WERE a U.S. helicopter in the Afghan theatre, the man hours it would have taken to paint it could have been better spent not only "scaring" hell of al Qaeda, their time would have been better spent actually capturing or killing them...

If it had been a US bird (sorry about that, that's what was told to me. and like an idiot I believed him.) the hours spend to paint it would have no bearing on the killing or capture of al-Qaeda members. The people who would be painting it would be maintence personel NOT the air crew (pilot/co-pilot, etc.).
